In recent years, Sharapova has entered this stretch of the tennis calendar as the player to beat. However, she arrived in the Spanish capital this time around in need of some time on court after early exits in Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart.
Against Bacsinszky she began the process of playing herself into form ahead of the defense of her French Open title, firing 28 winners en route to a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
In contrast to her opponent, Bacsinszky has been one of the busiest - and most successful - players in 2015, 25 wins helping her to two titles and a place in the Top 30. There was never any danger of her adding to this tally on Sunday lunchtime,
Sharapova making a flying start from which she never really looked back. Having breezed through the opening set, the Russian met slightly more resistance in the second, waiting until the eighth game to claim the solitary break thanks to a couple of trademark forehand winners.
