On one side of the clay court were the Kryptonians.
And on the other stood the Avengers… It could well have been a battle between two groups of superheroes, but it was actually the Mutua Madrid Open’s charity match, which took place this evening in the Caja Mágica’s Manolo Santana Stadium in front of thousands of tennis fans and all for a good cause.
Because this was for a good cause: raising money for the UNICEF Comité Español’s campaign to help victims of the earthquake that hit Nepal last Saturday, as well as for The Serena Williams Foundation, which helps children at risk of social exclusion to receive an education, and the Fundación FERO for cancer research. Arturo Vals played the role of presenter, commentator, tennis player, and of course, comedian. Wearing a yellow tutu, Vals directed the events on an evening in which winning was the least important thing. Actress and UNICEF ambassador Elsa Pataky led ‘The Avengers’, formed by tennis players David Ferrer, Carla Suárez and Fernando Verdasco, actors Antonio Velázquez and Jesús Castro and ex-gymnast Almudena Cid.
The other side of the net, Serena Williams’ ‘Kryptonians’ team was made up of tennis players Tomas Berdych and Caroline Wozniacki, actors Colton Haynes (Arrow) and Marc Clotet, ex-Real Madrid player Iván Helguera and television presenter Paloma Lago.
