From the outset, Kuznetsova came out with a clear gameplan and executed it to perfection to complete a surprisingly comfortable 6-2, 6-4 victory - just her second in her past 12 encounters with members of the Top 3.
"I feel very happy, it was a very tough match," Kuznetsova said.
"I was playing good, serving good - everything was working well." Kuznetsova's decision to jump all over Sharapova's serve reaped instant dividends, helping her dictate the early points and build a 3-1 lead.
A few games later, she showcased a different set of skills, scampering around the baseline to salvage a seemingly lost cause and claim the insurance break. The second set was altogether closer, but once again it was Kuznetsova that struck first, drawing the error from the No.3 seed after another punishing baseline exchange to break for a 3-2 lead.
With the winning post in sight, there was no let-up as she served it out before calmly saluting her entourage.
