A contest pitting two of the game's more aggressive ball-strikers was always likely to be light on drawn-out rallies. And it was Kvitova who flourished in the 68-minute shoot-out. In the previous round, Kvitova, who won the title in the Spanish capital three years ago, survived a real scare at the hands of CoCo Vandeweghe, eventually prevailing in the three rollercoaster sets.
However, the Czech produced a far more disciplined performance to see off Pavlyuchenkova, committing just eight unforced errors en route to a 6-1, 6-4 win.
