Sharapova and Azarenka have had a long, close history - coming into this one they were 7-7 - but Sharapova always had the edge on clay, winning all three of their previous meetings on the surface, and this one went the same way as the No.3-seeded Russian was just too powerful and just too accurate, battling an hour and 32 minutes to get past the unseeded Azarenka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
