It was a difficult afternoon for Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian emerged through a gruelling first round match 75 26 61 against lucky loser Lucie Hradecka.
Not only did she appear to be struggling with illness, Azarenka also hit her 100th double fault of the season.
But she is in the second round where she will meet Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday. “It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t my best performance out there,” she said.
“But the important is that I’m through to the next round and I can do better tomorrow. I didn’t feel very good out there. “It just happens sometimes, I couldn’t find the rhythm, couldn’t find the balance, physically I was a little just not there today.
“I just wasn’t feeling really well, sometimes it happens there’s something you can’t explain, you don’t feel really good, things don’t work out as well on the court. I had one of those days today. “The most important is you finish the match with a victory, fighting through all this, 100 double faults in a year but it’s important just to win the match.” Elsewhere Germany’s Sabine Lisicki was beaten in straight sets by Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 64 63 in a second round match.
