Williams had never lost to Suárez Navarro in their five previous meetings - she'd never lost a set, even - and this one was no different, though things did get a little closer in the 34-minute second set.
But the No.1-seeded Williams was always in control, fighting off all three break points she faced and breaking the No.10-seeded Suárez Navarro four times en route to an emphatic 6-1, 6-3 victory. "Every time I go out on the court with Serena I try to forget all of our previous matches, because in the end, every single match is different," Suárez Navarro said.
"And this time from the baseline, the difference wasn't that big - this is one of the times that I think I was playing better against her. "But she demonstrated she's playing at a really high level. She's playing her game, dominating and hitting some really good winners.
The winners just come out when she plays. Everything works for her."
