As one of the top eight seeds, Halep was the recipient of a first round bye in Rome, but hit the ground running against Riske, breaking five times en route to a 6-3, 6-0 win.
After a busy start to the season, Halep showed the first signs of fatigue at last week's Mutua Madrid Open, when she slipped to a shock defeat to Alizé Cornet. Against Riske, there was no sign of the mistakes that littered her brief stay in the Spanish capital, her movement sharp and her shots precise.
