Defending Mutua Madrid Open champion Maria Sharapova survived an almighty scare against WTA Rising Star Caroline Garcia to reach the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
"I think that the most important thing is maintaining that level and keeping that consistency. You know, I've seen many of her matches and she can come up with some great stuff. She's been able to do that against really good players." The player that stood opposite Sharapova on Manolo Santana was more mature - both physically and mentally - but once again it was Sharapova that emerged with the spoils, triumphing, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, after over two and a half hours.
Unlike that day in Paris, this time it was Sharapova that started the brighter, dominating the baseline exchanges to take the first set. Unperturbed, Garcia came right back, and her willingness to step in and attack was rewarded as she pipped the World No.3 to the second set.
