Simona Halep might be the hardest-working player at the BNP Paribas Open, recording her third three-set victory Wednesday when she beat Carla Suarez Navarro 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to her first semifinal at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The victory is particularly impressive because Suarez Navarro leads the WTA with 10 three-set victories this season. Suarez Navarro raced up to a 3-0 lead and then 4-1 before Halep broke back to even the match at 4-4. “I know how she plays, she runs the court and hits the angles,” Halep said. “I just tried to be more aggressive and take the ball faster and finish the points. I did everything I could.
” Halep improves her record to 5-4 against Suarez Navarro. This is the second consecutive year Halep reached the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open. Last year she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinal. This year, Halep awaits the winner of the Serena Williams-Timea Bacsinszky match. Bacsinszky has the longest active winning streak on the WTA Tour with 15 consecutive wins, and Williams trails with 14 straight.
