Defending BNP Paribas Open champion Flavia Pennetta opens the defense of her title against American Madison Brengle. Pennetta had a rough start to the year, but did reach the semifinals of Dubai. Brengle is coming off a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Saisai Zheng in the first round.
CoCo Vandeweghe (30) vs. Sesil Karatantcheva Stadium 3, fifth match
Vandeweghe, the granddaughter of New York Knicks legend Ernie Vandeweghe and niece of former UCLA star Kiki Vandeweghe, opens her BNP Paribas Open by facing the brash Karatantcheva, who reached the main draw with two wins in qualifying and beat Tavetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. Karatantcheva had a memorable moment in the tournament when she said she would kick Maria Sharapova’s behind off before losing in three sets.
Yanina Wickmayer vs. Maria Sharapova (2) Stadium 1
fourth match Two-time champion Maria Sharapova opens her tournament against Wickmayer, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. In their one meeting, Wickmayer pushed Sharapova to three sets before losing on the grass at Birmingham. Kei Nishikori (5) vs. Ryan Harrison
