Whatever Flavia Pennetta’s tears were about in the first set, there didn’t appear to be anything to worry about. The defending champion beat No. 2 Maria Sharapova, a two-time winner, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday night to advance to the quarterfinals.
It was the second consecutive year Pennetta defeated the second-ranked player at the BNP Paribas Open. Last year, she beat Li Na, who was the top seed and second-ranked player, in the semifinals and then No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the finals. The two players combined for 18 double faults, but each set remained largely on serve. In the first set, Sharapova broke for 5-3 and then served it out. It was early during the first set when cameras caught Pennetta with tears in her eyes. Pennetta said she couldn’t explain the crying because she was mystified about it herself. After the first set, Pennetta left the court. She said she had a cry and tried screaming to get the emotions out.
“Like I never expect. I never do something like that. It just was the first time,” Pennetta said. “I think I handled pretty good, because normally you go away and you don't want to stay on the court. But for me was important to just keep calm and try to play. In the end I just played really well.
” Pennetta said she was happy, and the tears are not from anything in her personal life. Pennetta was also asked if she was contemplating retirement, but said she won’t make that evaluation until the US Open.
