Sharapova continued her dominant week in beating WTA Rising Star Elina Svitolina, 6-1, 6-3, winning all but four points on the Ukrainian's second serve.
Sharapova has not dropped more than three games in a set all tournament. "I'm one step further than last year, which is a nice bonus," Sharapova said. "But the tournament is not over. I still have to give everything I have tomorrow." Ivanovic had to work a bit harder than Sharapova, as she trailed Varvara Lepchenko 5-3 in the first set, but rallied to win it in a tie-break.
She raced out to a 5-1 second set lead and withstood a comeback by the American en route to a 7-6(2), 6-4 triumph. "All the way up to that point, even though I was 5-1 up, it still felt like a battle all the way through," Ivanovic said. "I really tried to take it one point at a time and do the things that I've been working on and practicing and try not think too much about the score.
"I felt a little bit higher intensity today than yesterday, so it was really good to get through. Obviously tomorrow is going to be another challenge."
