Many of the WTA's stars venture to Australia for the Hobart International to get their games in gear the week before the start of the season's first Grand Slam - the Australian Open. Launched in 1994, the tournament has produced a different winner every year. Most notably, Kim Clijsters was victorious in 2000 and Petra Kvitova secured her maiden WTA title here in 2009.
Also, Alicia Molik did her home country proud by becoming Hobart's first Australian champion in 2003. A busy seaport that supports a major tourism industry, Hobart is known for its restaurants and cafes, and its vibrant music and nightlife culture. It is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. The event is held at the Domain Tennis Centre, Tasmania's premier tennis facility.
