Ana Ivanovic and husband Bastian Schweinsteiger have announced that they are expecting their first child

Ana Ivanovic and footballer husband Bastian Schweinsteiger have announced that they are expecting their first child.

The former World No.1 revealed the news on Twitter - by sharing a photo of three pairs of matching shoes, and expressing the couple's delight at the imminent addition to their family.

"Couldn't be more happy!" wrote the 30-year-old.

It has been a fantastic year on a personal level for former World No.1 Ana Ivanovic, marrying German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger this July, but in order to make it a fantastic year professionally Ivanovic requires a summer resurgence on the US hard courts. After dropping a three-setter to Carla Suárez  at the Olympics the Serb has now lost three straight and is barely hovering above the .500 mark for the season at 15-14. The 2014 western & southern open runner-up will open up with a winnable contest against 20-year-old Croatian Vekic. Long on promise, the former World No.62 has struggled to string together victories and will make her Cincinnati debut in the midst of a nine-match WTA-level losing streak.

In the previous round Ivanovic dropped a solitary game, and she was every bit as impressive against Halep, booking her place in the quarterfinals with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win.

"Honestly, I'm delighted," Ivanovic said. "It was a great battle in the first set, and she's such a great player and I really had to raise my game, which I think I did. It was not easy but I'm really thrilled to be through."

Heavy rain meant the players did not get on court until after 8pm. When they did finally emerge, another interruption was soon forthcoming, as the ball kids hastily tried to towel down the still-damp baseline.

On the resumption, Halep started brightest, opening up a 5-3 lead. However, with the set at her mercy she tightened, netting a couple of routine groundstrokes to surrender her advantage.

With her tail now up, Ivanovic produced some sparkling tennis to take the tie-break before racing through the second set.

"I was a little but anxious because it was stop and go. I think we both wanted to continue playing but it was a little bit slippery. I needed to stay calm and I'm glad I managed to do that," Ivanovic added when quizzed about the second interruption.

After a difficult start to the year, Ivanovic showed signs of recovery during a run to the semifinals in St. Petersburg, and carried on from where she left off against Gavrilova.

Ivanovic utilized the fast conditions to devastating effect, 19 winners (offset by just 16 unforced errors) helping her to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

In their previous meeting, last year in Rome, Gavrilova had prevailed in a rollercoaster, but it was clear early on that the rematch would be rather more brief.

A string of unforced errors, culminating in a double fault, saw Gavrilova surrender serve in the second game. While she broke back immediately, the Australian was powerless in the face of Ivanovic's onslaught.

The former World No.1 struck early in the second set, too, a couple of sweetly timed backhands bringing a break in the first game. With the forehand, usually the barometer for the Serb's game, also firing on all cylinders, from here a comeback never looked on the cards.

"We played once before and it was a battle on clay, so I knew it was a tough match and I had to step up because I knew she's a great mover and she strikes the ball really well," Ivanovic said.

"Here the ball flies a little bit, so I tried to use that to my advantage and move forward a little bit. And I did that very well and was very aggressive on my returns, so overall I'm very happy."

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia

Ana Ivanovic moved confidently in the semifinals of the St. Petersburg Ladies Open with a 6-1, 7-5 win over qualifier kozlova.

In her opening round match, Ivanovic took a while to get into her groove, but against Kozlova she hit the ground running, reeling off five straight games to pocket the opening set in 23 minutes. Kozlova, who was appearing the quarterfinals of a Premier event for the first time, gave a better account of herself in the second, battling back from 5-3 down before eventually succumbing.

Meeting Ivanovic for a place in the final will be another of the draw's more established names, Roberta Vinci.

And Vinci needed to draw on all her experience to see off tinea babos in an absorbing encounter, 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(4). Babos was in command for much of the final set, leading 5-3 and then 4-2 in the tie-break, but on each occasion could not find the decisive blow.

 No.4 seed ana ivanovic faced stiff opposition in talented young Russian, gasparyan, but the Serb overcame the challenge in her opening match at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy to reach the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-2.

Gasparyan made a splash to start the 2016 season, reaching the fourth round of the australian open, and kept things close in the opening set against Ivanovic, who fell in the third round in Melbourne to 2015 semifinalist keys.

"It was a very tough match," she told former WTA star pervak during her on-court interview. "She played very well, I thought. I knew she's had a very good start of the year, so I expected a battle today, and it was. I really had to dig deep at the end of the first, and also the second set. But I'm really happy to have the victory."

Ivanovic maintained controlled aggression throughout the 81-minute affair, striking 26 winners to 22 errors; Gasparyan did her best to stay with the former No.1, but was unable to dictate play in the crucial moments, hitting 16 winners to 18 unforced.
