Maria Sharapova began her journey along the Road To Singapore in some style on Tuesday, brushing aside the challenge of Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-0, 6-1, in little over an hour.
From the opening exchanges, Sharapova was in a rampant mood, wrapping up the first set in just 23 minutes. Shvedova eventually got on the scoreboard midway through the second set, and even carved out a couple of break back points when trailing 3-1. However, Sharapova was in no mood to hang about, snuffing out the danger, ruthlessly closing out the match shortly afterwards.
Shvedova's big game troubled Sharapova during their only previous meeting, at the 2009 French Open, but on this occasion she was no match. "To be honest, she's capable of playing really tough tennis. She's a big server, big strokes. Even though we haven't played in a while, she does like to play the top players," Sharapova said.
"She swings quite freely. She has had good results against some good players in her career. "It certainly felt good to start, you know, after not playing a match for a couple of months. Despite all the training, it's such a different feeling to go out on the court and play in front of, you know, a crowd in an actual match atmosphere."
