Eugenie Bouchard Win; Caroline García Out. Australian Open 2015

The benefits of severe public attention are not always tangible but Eugenie Bouchard will, for many reasons, doubtless appreciate the clamour that has come her way in the past year.

Not least of which is a honed mental resilience, which helped her withstand, overcome and then wholly flatten France’s Caroline Garcia 7-5 6-0 on Rod Laver Arena. Bouchard will plan to be still in the tournament deep into next week but Garcia, a player of immense ability, may wish to sit down and reassess. Should she glance at her curriculum vitae, the French player will find she is doing very nicely. A first WTA tournament win last year - in Bogota where she took the doubles crown as well - and wins against eight top 20 players have set her for a sprightly year ahead.
Her career prize money stands at $1.2 million and the No.36 ranking will undoubtedly rise. Garcia, if indeed she is of that inclination, has every reason to feel pleased with herself.
