SHENZHEN, China
Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova took some time out ahead of the Shenzhen Open to meet dragons and cook up traditional Chinese snacks in Shenzhen Gankeng Kejia Town. "The city's very big - almost like my country," Halep said. "I've really enjoyed this experience."
"China is amazing!" Kvitova said after the visit. "Finally I've seen something outside of tennis in China, and it's just beautiful." Halep and Kvitova, ranked No.3 and No.4 in the world, respectively, are the Top 2 seeds at the Shenzhen Open, an International-level event with $500,000 of prize money that kicks off on Sunday. "The stadium is big and very nice," Halep said of the 4,000-seat Centre Court at the Longgang Tennis Centre. "I really like practicing there and I'm looking forward to starting the tournament here. "My goal is to play in Singapore again this year, so I have to play my best at every tournament. I'll just go match by match and tournament by tournament, and I hope to be in the Top 8 again." During the visit, Kvitova talked about how highly her good friend, Li Na, spoke of the Shenzhen Open. The Chinese trailblazer actually won the first two editions of the event, in 2013 and 2014. "She said the Shenzhen Open is a very nice tournament at the beginning of the year," Kvitova said. "I know she played well here, so I will try my best too."
