MELBOURNE, Australia
Madison Keys and Ivanovic gathered themselves after a distressing turn of events on Rod Laver Arena to put on a thriller at the australian open on Saturday night.
After Ivanovic built a 6-4, 1-0 lead, the match was stopped for an hour as Ivanovic's coach - Nigel Sears, who had collapsed in the stands - was tended to and eventually carried off on a stretcher.
When play resumed, the rest of the second set was a see-saw - first Ivanovic broke to lead 2-0, then Keys caught back up to 2-all, then Ivanovic went up 4-2, then Keys surged to take the set, 6-4.
The No.20-seeded Ivanovic jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set but the No.15-seeded Keys bounced back one more time, winning six of the last seven games to close the match out, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"I had chances in the first set. Wasn't really able to convert. Had one bad service game. Then kind of just battled throughout the whole second set," Keys said after the match. "I had a little bit of a slow start in the third, but I managed to kind of get it back and figure it out, fight back and get the win.
"It was just trying to get one more ball, just stay in it, make her win it and not give it to her."
"As soon as we walked on the court, it was an amazing feeling," Ivanovic commented.
