Women’s ninth seed Karolina Pliskova has overcome a shaky first set to advance to the third round of Australian Open 2016, recording a late-night 7-6(5) 6-1 victory over Germany’s Julia Goerges in Melbourne on Thursday.
Both women struggled to find consistency throughout the match, equally providing flashes of impressive shot-making in between rudimentary mistakes.
Pliskova sent down 13 aces for the match and dominated play from the baseline, but simple errors from the tall Czech let Goerges into the match in a lengthy 63-minute first set.
“I’m really happy with the win, but it’s always tough to play a friend on court,” Pliskova said.
“It wasn’t really easy to win, but just happy to make it to round three.”
With a swiping forehand, Goerges took it to Pliskova in the first set, but lacked the polish that has taken Pliskova into the top 10 of the WTA rankings, finishing with 37 unforced errors to Pliskova’s 17.
