He is the mastermind to have unlocked an even greater potential in Serena Williams, a then 13-time Grand Slam-winning champion who had seemingly already scaled the game’s heights.
Serena’s record since mid-2012, since deep-thinking Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou took the coaching reins, is testament enough – 93 per cent of matches won, including eight of the 14 majors she has contested.
Having harboured dreams of becoming a Grand Slam-winning great himself, Mouratoglou, the son of a Greek father and French mother, turned his back on his parents’ dream to have him enter into a lucrative family business to follow his true passion, tennis.
A promising junior, Mouratoglou would never come close to becoming a professional player. “Otherwise you’d have heard,” he quipped during a Melbourne coaching clinic on the eve of this year’s Australian Open.
