One of the most dangerous unseeded players made a statement to begin her US Open on Monday, as American Sloane Stephens won eight of the last nine games to defeat former US Open singles finalist Roberta Vinci in Louis Armstrong Stadium, 7-5, 6-1.
Stephens, who missed nearly a year of action due to a foot injury that required surgery, returned to competitive tennis at Wimbledon but saw her ranking sit outside the world's Top 900 as the US Open Series began in earnest this summer.
