Reigning US Open runner-up and current top seed Karolina Pliskova survived her first-round test on Tuesday, powering her way past Magda Linette 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
As one-sided as the score line may appear, it certainly was not how the match played out. Linette, the world No. 72 from Poland, put the pressure on the top seed for much of the match to keep the scores close and push the majority of the games to within one point. In fact, Linette earned 10 break point chances throughout the match, but could only convert on one. In the end, the world No. 1 had the stronger service game and the power groundstrokes that gave her the upper hand.
Early in the first set, Pliskova took a 4-1 lead that saw her stepping in to fire winners against the Pole. Linette had a window of opportunity with triple break point on Pliskova's serve at 4-2, but the Czech quickly erased those chances to survive the game and follow with a break to take the first set.
