Making your tour-level debut is overwhelming enough, but doing so against an opponent named Williams on the grand stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium is downright nerve-racking. Yet the young Slovak ignored her nerves and came out swinging, firing aces and winners to shake Williams just enough to steal a set off of her. But when the dust had settled, experience prevailed, as Williams secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win to escape the Kuzmova threat and advance to the second round.
