Since returning from Achilles surgery at the start of the summer, Cibulkova has struggled for consistency. But in Tokyo the Slovak has looked better with each passing match and for much of her 7-6(5), 6-3 triumph over defending champion Ivanovic she looked close to her ebullient best.
At last month's US Open, Cibulkova caused the first upset in a tournament of upsets when she knocked out Ivanovic. Just as on that occasion, the Slovak did not make the fastest of starts, twice trailing by a break in the first set. However, once she hit the front there was no stopping her. Having made it into the tie-break, a salvo of typically fierce forehands gave Cibulkova the set and another clubbing blow from the same wing brought her a couple of break points at the start of the second.
She only needed one, rifling a backhand down the line.
