But first for Wozniacki was another player she's had trouble with as of late - not only did Kerber lead their head-to-head, 6-4, and win three of their last four meetings, but she had also won their only previous meeting in Tokyo, in the semifinals of the Premier-level tournament two years ago.
And there was danger this time, too - after Wozniacki cruised through the first set, 6-2, the No.5-seeded Kerber cruised just as much in the second set, retaliating by the exact same scoreline, 6-2. The German also broke in the first game of the third - but the No.1-seeded Wozniacki was just too solid from there, rattling off six of the last eight games of the match to complete a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
"It was a tough match - it always is when I play Angelique," Wozniacki said.
"I started off well in the first set. I was playing well, and she was making quite a few errors. Second set it turned around, but it was competitive towards the end, and in the third set I thought we both played at a really high level.
