It’s been smooth sailing so far at the U S Open for two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
The No. 5 seed eased into the fourth round for just the third time in her career with a 6-2 6-1 thumping of No. 32 Anna Schmiedlova on a glorious Saturday afternoon in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The power-serving Czech has yielded 12 games in three straight-set victories to gain the round of 16 for the first time since 2012.
Kvitova trailed just once in the match at 1-0 in the second set when Schmiedlova held serve. In the match Kvitova cracked 29 winners, averaged 100 mph on her first serves, slammed six aces and won 86 per cent of her first serves to dominate the 25-year-old Slovak. In the opening set she lost a mere five points in four service games.
“I am just really happy the way I played today, “Kviotva said on court after the 66-minute romp. “ I am feeling very relaxed and enjoying tennis.”
That has not always been the case this season at the Grand Slams for the 25-year-old left-hander. She lost in the third round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and in the fourth round at the French.
But, a win last week at New Haven, her third WTA Tour crown this season, was a nice run-up to Flushing Meadows.
“I felt really great last week and it helped with my confidence and I think that showed today,” said Kvitova.
