History was on Venus Williams’ side when she stepped inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday afternoon. And despite a slow start and jittery second set, the No. 23 seed ensured her early success at the US Open continued.
The two-time US Open champion showed some rare moments of nerves when she failed to convert four match points in the second set before eventually posting a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 first-round win over Monica Puig.
Williams, who came into New York having never lost her opening match in Flushing Meadows, needed to go the distance to ensure that streak continued as she booked her place in the second round for the 17th consecutive time. She will now face the winner of the all-American clash between Irina Falconi and Samantha Crawford.
"The first round, you don't want to play your best tennis there, but you do want to play well," Williams said. "I think by the time I got to the third set I was able to clean my game up a little bit. Give her a lot of credit, too. She had a lot of great shots at the right moments, so she's a really good competitor." One of four former US Open champions in the main draw, Williams – who has played in more US Opens than anybody else in the draw – settled down after a shaky start that saw her lose her first service game and fall behind 2-0 to world No. 85 Puig. But while Williams remained aggressive from the baseline, the Puerto Rican seemed content to play a safer brand of tennis and give herself more margin for error.
