Simona Halep made a flying start at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, brushing aside the challenge of fellow WTA Rising Star Eugenie Bouchard in little over an hour.
Both players were making their debut at the season finale, and it was Halep that dealt with the occasion better, running out a 6-2, 6-3 winner. Halep set the tone in the opening game, breaking when Bouchard pushed a backhand wide. In a blink of an eye the Romanian stretched this lead to 4-0.
While Bouchard did eventually get on the scoreboard, it was merely delaying the inevitable, Halep calmly serving out the set. With all the momentum behind her, Halep showed no sign of slowing down, racing through the first three games of the second. At 3-1, she showed a rare sign of fallibility, finding the tape with a routine short forehand.
However, she was not to be denied, holding firm in the face of some late pressure to close out the match. "I played really well and am really happy to have found my game again," Halep said in her on-court interview with Andrew Krasny. "I played aggressive at the right times and hit some winners. "She is a great player and is very young and will definitely be at the top for a long time." Bouchard's last competitive outing came nearly three weeks ago, in Beijing, and she struggled to shake of her rustiness, committing 30 unforced errors.
By contrast, Halep, who also entered the tournament slightly short on match practice, made just 11.
