Mallory Burdette announces retirement because of a nagging shoulder injury

After a glittering college career Burdette moved to the pros in 2012, catching the tennis world's eye at her first WTA event in Stanford - after reaching the second round, she stormed out to a 5-2 lead Marion Bartoli, with set point, before the then-Top 10 player came back to win in straight sets.

Burdette kept it up over the next year, reaching the third round three times at WTA events (including the US Open) and twice pushing Top 20 players to three sets (Maria Kirilenko and Jelena Jankovic). But a shoulder injury that kept her out the last few months of 2013 just hasn't let up in 2014, and the American - who just turned 23 earlier this year - has had to close the curtain on her career.
