Maria Sharapova was forced to come from behind to reach the third round. Rogers Cup 2014

On Wednesday afternoon, the crowd at Uniprix Stadium almost lost another favourite, as Maria Sharapova was forced to come from behind to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

But in the end, the Russian regained her poise and disposed of Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) after an uneven match that lasted 2:11. The French Open champion and fourth seed got off to a rocky start: she hit eight double faults and was broken twice in the first set. After a series of unforced errors, she seemed to be headed straight home, but the champion came to her senses at 1-2 (1-3 play) against her in the second.
From then on, there was nothing the 20-year-old Spanish star, who is currently ranked no.27 in the world, could do. Sharapova will take on another Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro (14), in the third round.
