Young American Madison Keys came out firing in her first main draw match on Monday, defeating Alize Cornet 6-2, 6-4. Keys, a 19-year-old from Illinois, opened up the match with three breaks to clinch the first set in just 38 minutes.
The young gun continued to dominate in the second set against a frustrated Cornet, registering nearly six times as many winners as her opponent and recording her first main draw win in Cincinnati Keys advances to the second round to face former champion Maria Sharapova. American qualifier Taylor Townsend notched a win in her first main draw match in Cincinnati, defeating Klara Koukalova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Townsend, a former ITF World Junior Champion from Chicago, won four straight games after falling behind 2-3 to clinch the first set.
Koukalova battled back to take the second, breaking the young American three times. The two exchanged nine breaks in the third set, with Townsend edging out the Czech for the win. Townsend is set to take on No. 13 seed Flavia Pennetta in the second round. American wild card Lauren Davis fell to Elina Svitolina 3-6, 2-6 in the first round of the Western & Southern Open today.
The 20-year-old Ohio native was broken a total of four times in her 90 minute match against the 19-year-old from Austria. Making her first appearance in Cincinnati, Svitolina will advance to the second round to face No.3 seed and Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova.
