SERENA WILLIAMS INTO SFS IN ROGERS CUP 2014

On Friday afternoon on Centre Court at Uniprix Stadium, Serena and Venus Williams made it into the semifinals of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

The sisters spent just under five hours on the court to gain their spots among the final four. They will meet for the 25th time. Serena was hindered by Caroline Wozniacki’s resistance but finally got the upper hand in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 7-5) in 2:41. It was their eighth meeting and the American’s seventh win. Wozniacki’s only triumph over Serena came in 2012. In a battle between power and consistency, the younger Williams hit 15 aces and broke her rival five times versus four for the 24-year-old Dane, who played excellent tennis. In the next match, Venus Williams, who had given it her all in the third round against Angelique Kerber of Germany, had to dig deep against Carla Suarez Navarro (14) of Spain. The American was victorious in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) after 2:11. In a match with many twists, the players were broken a total of 12 times (7 for Suarez Navarro and 5 for Williams) and made 17 double faults (8 by the American). In the end, Venus Williams dominated the meeting, racking up 100 points versus 84 for her rival. It was the players’ fourth meeting. They are now 2-2.
