SERENA WILLIAMS ADVANCES IN ROGERS CUP 2014. 7 AUGUST 2014

When Serena Williams plays like she did on Wednesday night in her second-round match at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, there’s just no stopping her.

The world no.1 took 58 minutes to eclipse Samantha Stosur of Australia in two sets (6-0, 6-2) on her 10th ace. Williams didn’t give away a single break point and was able to convert five of the ten she received. There’s absolutely no denying it: the powerful American played a beautiful match. Her opponent on Thursday will be 15th seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, who was a semifinalist at Wimbledon this year. Venus Williams coasted into the third round, ousting Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in two sets (6-3, 6-2). The match between Jelena Jankovic (7th) of Serbia and Sloane Stephens of the US was of an entirely different order. Jankovic found her way out of trouble several times and won the three-hour marathon in three close sets (6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4)). A hard-fought battle that ended with the customary handshake.
