Former Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova stunned No.7 seed Genie Bouchard in their second round matchup, defeating the 20-year-old 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
This marks the second week in a row that the young Canadian makes an early exit. She lost in the second round in Montreal to American qualifier Shelby Rogers. When asked about her recent early exits Bouchard said, “I feel better this week than last week, so that's a positive. It's all about moving forward.” The 2013 finalist battled back from 0-4 in the first set tiebreak and 4-6 in the second set tiebreak to clinch her eighth win over the former US Open champion. “It's been really good to play such close matches and then come out on top,” Serena said of her three set wins this summer.
Serena advances to the round of 16 for the fourth time in Cincinnati and is set to face No.13 seed Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta ended American qualifier Taylor Townsend’s run, defeating the 18-year-old 6-4, 6-3. The Italian battled back from being down 1-4 in the first set, winning five straight games and the set. Pennetta rolled through the second set, breaking Townsend four times in the process. Elina Svitolina served up the biggest upset on the women’s side of the 2014 Western & Southern Open Wednesday, defeating No.3 seed Petra Kvitova 6-2, 7-6(2).
The 19-year-old from Ukraine won the first set in just 36 minutes, breaking the Wimbledon champion twice. The second set proved more of a challenge, as Kvitova got off to a quick 3-0 start. Svitolina rallied back and pushed the lefty to a tiebreak. At 2-2 in the tiebreak, Svitolina won five straight points to close out the match and record her first win against a Top 10 player.
