After her second Wimbledon triumph, Kvitova began her US summer hardcourt swing with a third round outing last week in Montréal.

After a first round bye in Cincinnati, she had to open her campaign against the WTA's second-ranked teen, Svitolina. In Svitolina's first match since her successful Baku title defense last month, she was a straight set winner over Lauren Davis in her Cincinnati opener.
Svitolina won eight of the first nine points in getting out to a one-break lead over the third-seeded Kvitova. That eventually became a two-break advantage during a comfortable first set win. The second set was back-and-forth. Kvitova went up 3-0 before Svitolina won three straight games of her own. The Ukrainian eventually served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 but was unable to close it out either time. But she regrouped in the tie-break, and from 2-2 ran off five straight points to finish off her 6-2, 7-6(2) triumph.
