In a second-round meeting between two Grand Slam champions, 16th-seeded Australian Sam Stosur brushed aside Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-3 in 61 minutes. Stosur now leads their head-to-head 8-4, though one of her losses came in the 2010 Roland Garros final. There were mixed results for two young Americans in action.
No. 17 seed Sloane Stephens cruised past Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-0, but Taylor Townsend was beaten 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 by 20th seed Flavia Pennetta. World No. 62 Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor recorded a huge upset Saturday, as she upset fifth seed Angelique Kerber 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes.
Prior to this week, Torro-Flor had gone winless in tour-level action since a loss to Kerber in the second round of the Tokyo tournament last September. Ana Ivanovic, the No. 11 seed, escaped with a victory in her second-round match, prevailing against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(1) after two hours and 28 minutes.
Ivanovic won the Indian Wells title in 2008.
