“This is beautiful,” said the 19-year-old Keys, who’s in Charleston for the second straight year. It was quite breezy for the two Americans, but the friends traded playful rallies as local media snapped photos and captured video of the gorgeous scene, complete with seagulls, sailboats and the Ravenel Bridge. “You never know where the ball is going to bounce,” laughed Stephens, 21. “This view is absolutely amazing.” Stephens, the No. 5 seed, gets a first-round bye. Keys, seeded No. 15, will play veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in her opener.
A year ago Keys marched all the way to the quarterfinals here, losing to Venus Williams. “I love Charleston,” Keys said. “I love the food, the tournament is so great and the people are so friendly!”
