What makes former Family Circle Cup champion Jelena Jankovic laugh the most? How has up-and-comer Genie Bouchard muscled her way into the top of the game? Who are the three hardest opponents Serena Williams has ever faced? Those questions and more were put to the top stars of the WTA Tour Monday afternoon at the Daniel Island Club where the top eight seeds in Charleston participated in the WTA’s All-Access Hour. The hour gives media outlets up close and personal time with the best players in action this week, the stars rotating stations for an hour of smiling for the camera talking about their favorite Charleston hot spots and discussing the ins and outs of their tennis games. Jankovic, Bouchard and Williams were joined by Sam Stosur, Sorana Cirstea, Sara Errani, Sabine Lisicki and Sloane Stephens.
“I make myself laugh the most,” Jankovic said (laughing, of course). “Sometimes my tongue gets ahead of my brain.” Players autographed tournament paraphernalia before getting their photos taken holding the tournament’s #Unmatched, #WellServed and #MakeARacket hashtags with the Club’s scenic background behind them. Local news outlets did one-on-ones with them on camera before they would make their way to the WTA Live show, an online-only live broadcast on YouTube. The show’s challenge for the players on Monday? Golf. “I told you guys, I’m only good at tennis,” said three-time champion Serena. She took her chance in going for a big swing with her putter, only to see the ball whiz by the cup. Stephens, on the other hand, was the putting master of the day, making two rather impressive strokes. The day was a special one for Stosur, who celebrated her 30th birthday on Sunday. She got cake, balloons and a birthday wish – all on camera. “I’m used to celebrating my birthday in Charleston,” the 2010 champion said. “Honestly, a few of my favorite restaurants in the world are here, so it’s not a bad place to be.”
