The 26-year-old Wozniacki won only six more points than her teenage challenger – but it was enough to carry the momentum and achieve a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory to advance to the second round.
Clay is not her favourite surface, but she must be pleased to progress, having missed the entire clay season in 2016 with a right ankle injury, and having been forced this year to retire in the first round in Strasbourg and withdraw from Rome with a lower back issue. Even for such a great mover, Wozniacki’s consistent, counter-punching game style is exhausting and she will not be thankful to have been forced to cover 1.7 kilometres to earn her opening win at a two-week tournament.
