It was the great golfer Gary Player – or possibly the Hollywood mogul Sam Goldwyn, depending which reference source you rely on – who first said: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” Kristina Mladenovic has never shied away from putting in the required effort, but her intense focus on strength work and conditioning over the last winter have seen her ranking soar from No.51 at the end of January to a career-high No.14 now.
For the 24-year-old, her prospects at Roland-Garros 2017 look as sunny as the cloudless skies over Paris this week.
Romantic as it may sound to walk on court with the support of a host nation behind you, for some competitors that simply translates into an intolerable burden of expectation, and thus to inevitable meltdown. Mladenovic, on the other hand, is a natural for the big stage and the grand occasion, which is just as well given the rising domestic babble of anticipation about her prospects.
