Safarova advances to Final into New Haven 2015

No.4 seed Lucie Safarova rebounded well from a nearly three-hour quarterfinal on Thursday to work her way past lucky loser Lesia Tsurenko, 6-2, 7-6(4), reaching her third WTA final of the season at the Connecticut Open. Safarova had things all her own way from the outset, racing out to a set and two-break lead before the unseeded Ukrainian began to make things tough for the French Open finalist.

Tsurenko entered the main draw following the withdrawal of top-seeded Simona Halep, but was making the most of her week in New Haven with big wins over two of Safarova's countrywomen in Barbora Strycova and No.5 seed Karolina Pliskova - both in straight sets. Already in the midst of a solid summer that saw her capture her first WTA title in Istanbul and reach her first Premier 5 quarterfinal in Toronto, she broke the Czech lefty three times - saving a match point at 5-4 - to force a second set tie-break.
