Canadians were officially eliminated from the singles draw on Tuesday, as wild cards Francoise Abanda and Carol Zhao lost in their opening matches. Abanda was impressive against No. 16 seed Andrea Petkovic, taking the first set and pushing her to three sets. The 18-year-old could not post the upset though, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to the German. Zhao also fell in the first round when American Madison Brengle handed her double breadsticks for a score of 6-1, 6-1. Also happening later in the day on Tuesday, No. 15 seed Sara Errani advanced to the second round after defeating Kristina Mladenovic 5-7, 6-1, 6-0.
She will face Brengle in the second round. Great Britain’s Heather Watson meanwhile moved on to the next round after ousting Irina Falconi 6-1, 6-1.
Watson will next play against Petkovic. In the closing match of the night, Sloane Stephens went head-to-head with Dominika Cibulkova.
Stephens, who is coming off her first WTA title at Washington, took an early lead in the first set but Cibulkova battled back to take the set and match. She ousted the American 6-3, 6-4. Cibulkova will meet Alize Cornet in the second round.
