Anna Tatishvili needed to qualify just to get into the US Open main draw, but that wasn’t enough for her. The 25-year-old American dominated No. 8 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, with most of the games not even close before the 6-2, 6-1 finish.
The empty Grandstand suddenly had lines at the entrance when it became clear that Tatishvili was close to upsetting Pliskova, but the match went by more quickly than the spectators could find seats. While she may not be a household name, Tatishvili is not without credentials. She has been ranked as high as No. 50 in the world and currently stands at No. 121. She has previously made it to the fourth round of the US Open (2012). She is also a doubles veteran and is entered with fellow American Irina Falconi (who beat Samantha Crawford today to advance to the second round as well) in the women’s doubles event.
