The Serbian player spoke to the Mutua Madrid Open after signing autographs at the Yonex stand and she is confident of repeating or improving on her performance last year, when she reached the semi-finals.
Ana Ivanovic came through her first-round tie at the Mutua Madrid Open with an important victory over the young Madison Keys, and shortly afterwards she took a few minutes out to meet her fans and sign some autographs at the Yonex stand.
There, the Serbian player spoke to the official Mutua Madrid Open media in an interview in which she said she is hoping to be able to repeat her great performance at the Caja Mágica last year, when she reached the semi-finals.
You beat Madison Keys in the first round earlier on today. How did you find the match?
It was a very good start for me, especially given that I was up against an opponent I didn’t know much about beforehand. It was a good start and even though the second set was quite close, I was really happy to finish things off in two sets. You reached the Mutua Madrid Open semi-finals last year.
Do you think you can match or improve on that performance this year?
I really hope so. Every match is different and the competition is very tough, there are a lot of good players here this year. The next match will hopefully act as another opportunity for me to grow [as a player]. Hopefully I’ll be here all week [laughs]. This has been a very good season for you so far, for example you reached the Stuttgart final recently.
Do you think you’re close to your best level?
Yes, definitely. It is very hard to compare this year with 2008 or 2007, which was a long time ago, but I’m really happy with the way everything is going at the moment. I have a good team around me and I’m excited to be competing at his level. I just hope I can keep it up.
What are your thoughts on the Mutua Madrid Open?
I think it’s a great event. There are always loads of fans here to watch and support us, which really means a lot.
What are your long-term goals?
I’d love to reclaim the world no. 1 ranking by winning a grand slam. That’s my main goal, but like I said I’m just happy to be competing again, and with the great team I have around me hopefully I can achieve that.
