The US player, champion of the last two editions of the Madrid tournament, announced her withdrawal from the Mutua Madrid Open due to an injury to her left thigh. Petra Kvitova therefore progresses to the semis.
The Mutua Madrid Open will have a new champion. US player Serena Williams, champion of the last two editions of the Premier Mandatory in Madrid, has announced her withdrawal from the 2014 edition with an injury to her left thigh.
The news means that Czech player Petra Kvitova, the defending champion’s opponent in the Mutua Madrid Open quarter-finals, is now in the semis, where she will be bidding for a place in the final against the winner of the clash between Simona Halep and Ana Ivanovic, who play each other in Friday’s day session.
“I have a left thigh injury and, unfortunately, have to withdraw from this year’s Mutua Madrid Open. It happened during my first round match. It started to get better, but most importantly right now, I just need some time to rest and recover.
It’s beyond words. It’s so frustrating. We couldn’t ask for a better tournament and I love it here in Madrid. I love being a champion here. Manolo Santana and his team put on a great tournament.
This is not the way I wanted this week to end”, announced the US player in a statement. Before her withdrawal, Williams was smashing more records at the Mutua Madrid Open. The world number one had claimed 15 consecutive victories on the clay of Madrid and against Carla Suárez, her last opponent at this year’s tournament, she sealed her 650th win on the women’s tour.
