The Russian player took time out to speak with Madrid-Open.com during an event in the Caja Mágica to express her desire of reclaiming her place among the world’s best players, speak about her feelings ahead of taking on her former coach in the doubles competition and also to praise the work of the Mutua Madrid Open.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is having a great time at the Mutua Madrid Open. After beating Spain’s Tita Torró, the Russian met with the tournament’s official website to speak about her short-term goals, her feelings about taking on her former coach in doubles competition, and also to praise the level of organisation in the Spanish capital’s combined Masters 1000 competition.
Congratulations on a successful opener in Madrid. How are you feeling?
I feel good, I’ve had some good results in previous years here so I have good memories and I really like this tournament and I like the atmosphere and it’s a great facility so it’s really nice. In the next doubles round you meet Martina, your ex-coach.
How will you be preparing for the clash?
It’s not very easy mentally, it’s going to be a little bit strange because she used to be my coach and we still have a good relationship so I don’t really feel like beating her on the court [laughs]. It’s going to be a tough match, last time I lost against her in the doubles in Miami so hopefully I can analyse that and things will be better here.
How do you see the tournament this year, having won the doubles last season?
6 This tournament is very tough every year because all the top girls play here. Everyone is playing their best tennis so you have to be ready from the first round so it’s tough, but I won my match and we’ll see.
What are your short-term goals?
It would be nice to get back in the top 20 or top 15, I was ranked top 15 a couple of years ago so it would be nice to get back there in the short term and then see what happens. My goal is to play my best tennis and improve in every tournament and just enjoy myself.
