The Danish player had a busy day at the Mutua Madrid Open. She signed autographs for hundreds of fans who showed up at the official store on Level -2 of the Caja Mágica and spoke to Madrid-Open.com about her impressions before her opener.
Caroline Wozniacki, number 14 in the WTA ranking, is in her sixth Mutua Madrid Open, a tournament that she nearly conquered in 2009 but has caused her problems in recent years.
In the official shop, located on Level -2 of the Caja Mágica, the Dane spoke to Madrid-Open.com about her experiences preparing in Madrid, her expectations for her opener and her desire to win the 2014 title.
Welcome to Madrid, how are you feeling here?
I feel good, I love this tournament and it seems like the crowd is really big this year so I’m excited to play tomorrow. Your first match is against Ekaterina Makarova, who you have never lost to before.
What are your feelings ahead of this match?
She’s a very tough player, she’s playing very well and she’s very solid, so it’s not going to be easy but I’m looking forward to it.
You went out in the first round last year, do you feel more prepared this time round in Madrid?
Yeah, it’s a hard tournament and everyone is playing well, but I hope to do better than last year. You haven’t won a title yet this year and came very close to winning here in 2009.
Do you think you can reach the Madrid final and win it?
I was in the final here in 2009 and I’m just taking one match at a time and I’m hoping for a good one.
You could meet Sharapova or Na Li in the semis.
Do you get especially motivated for these types of matches?
I honestly don’t think about it, every match is the same for me and I just want to keep playing well.
This is your sixth time playing in Madrid.
What does the tournament mean to you?
It’s a big tournament and everyone wants to play here so it’s obviously a good test on the clay courts.
