On Sunday, the Lacoste store in Miami Beach was abuzz, but it wasn’t because of a sale.
Tennis stars Dominika Cibulkova and Christina McHale joined tournament officials and fans to unveil the 2017 Miami Open women’s draw.
Along with the pros, audience members took turns randomly selecting poker chips to determine matchups.
Hosted by CBS Miami’s Jim Berry, the ceremony was a spectacle for fans and guests alike. Among those in attendance was tournament director Adam Barrett, who assured the crowd the Miami Open is here to stay.
“We continue to look for ways to improve the event. Our only goal is to run the best event among the ATP and WTA tours,” Barrett said. “I’ve been with the event since 1990. All I know is, we’re not who we are without the community and without South Florida.”
The atmosphere was a true Miami welcome: upbeat music, sweet champagne and divine hors d’oeuvres. Guests also learned more about the stars.
Cibulkova, who is a No. 4 seed in the tournament, said 2016 was the best year of her career. In addition to winning on the court, getting married presented a different kind of victory.
“I had two goals—winning matches and to have a great wedding, so it was one of the best years. This is really my favorite tournament. I just love the city, so it makes everything better,” she said
