INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - No.3 seed Karolina Pliskova has punched her ticket into the final eight at the bnp Paribas open after timea Bacsinszky found herself being forced to retire from their match, citing a left wrist injury.
"I'm definitely happy to be there in the quarterfinals, but of course not the way how I wanted to win the match today," Pliskova acknowledged in her post-match press conference.
Bacsinszky seemed visibly hampered by the injury, avoiding the backhand wing in favor of a slice forehand. She fell behind a double break and trailed Pliskova 1-5 before being forced to retire.
"I saw it during the first few games that she wasn't hitting many backhands," Pliskova said. "Just a few in the second game. For her it was tough for her to play without the backhand, so there was no other way probably.
